Date a girl who reads.

This is shamelessly stolen from my minxy friend Nicole who linked to it and posted it as a note on facebook. Of course, the real credit goes to the author, Rosemarie Urquico. I can relate to this so intensely that it makes me ache for all the books I have loved and will love and all the words I hope to write.

"Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilightseries.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes."
~Rosemarie Urquico

{I love to read...sometimes even in Spanish. Just for the record.}

{And if anyone's wondering, I would definitely rather receive books than flowers or jewelry. You can hold me to that.}

Honesty; I've heard it's the best policy

I have a confession to make…

I have been ashamed of this blog.

I have been ashamed because I am horrible with fancy internet layouts and cannot figure out how to make a header or prettify this blog.

I have been ashamed because I can’t think of interesting things to say or post.

I have been ashamed because I love making friends and yet as I watch people I know network and form friendships, I seem to be sitting around watching the dust settle on my keyboard, unable to figure out how to be me.

The root of the problem is that I have been ashamed to be me and that’s not ok. I often feel like I have to separate parts of my life to be accepted. If my Twilight-hating friends knew I enjoy dorking out at midnight showings and inhaling the books like I do a can of Dr. Pepper, I worry they would judge me and drop me. If I blog with just my fellow blogger friends in mind, I fear what my family will think of this silly little place with no profound thoughts—I’m supposed to be “the writer” in the family, but I just want to have fun. I’ve been censoring myself way too often, worrying that so-and-so will happen to read this or that and judge me for it. What it whittles down to is that I’ve been too afraid to mix my life all together and just be completely me and let people do with that what they will.

Well, enough is enough.

This is my vow to try to start being myself, critics be damned. We (me-the blogger, and you-the potential blogging friend) may not see eye to eye on everything; I may love purple when you hate it; but isn’t it so much nicer when everyone is themselves?

Here are some affirmations of who I am and what’s real in my life:

I like Twilight. I don’t know why. What’s more, I’m done trying to make excuses or explain it. Take it or leave it.

As much as I like Twilight, I like to make fun of Twilight. That’s just the way I am about things I truly love—snarky and sarcastic. A sense of humor is a good thing, people.

These icons are hilarious quotes from Cleolinda’s brilliant recaps of the Twilight books. She translates scenarios to get at what they’re really saying.

I’m a senior in college and I’ve had a miserable go of it. I refuse to believe that these 4 years were “the best time of my life” because I have more faith in my future than that. My best years will be whenever I decide they are. I’ve already had some of the best “times of my life” and I trust that many more are to come.

I love to cook and bake and while I think I make edible dishes, I’m no great talent. I follow a recipe and it brings me great joy, but I’m not whipping around the kitchen creating my own masterpiece recipes. I do love my apron to pieces though.

I am not fashionable and I don’t like shopping. I do like clothes and I do admire fashion on others. I would like to be fashionable, but a.) I’m no good at styling and b.) the process of shopping with my funds depresses me and so I’ve never enjoyed it. Sometimes, I firmly believe that if someone handed me a million dollars I could be so chic; I would buy the entire contents of the Anthropologie catalogue and die happy. But, in reality, I think I’m just wired wrong or something.

I'd rather be in Salzburg.

{Summer is my favorite}

I like good & bad T.V. I can’t say which show fits which category because everybody has a different opinion. Some of my all-time favorites include: Gilmore Girls (ok, this one is just straight up GOOD T.V.—I dare you to deny it), The Office, The O.C., Arrested Development, Pushing Daisies, and more that I’m forgetting. Current favorites include: How I Met Your Mother, The Vampire Diaries, and Glee.

I love my imagination and I love reading. I find the worlds my mind creates as I read precious and I work really hard to preserve the way I originally imagined things if I see a movie of a book. My Hogwarts is still very much intact and very much WAY COOLER than the movies. My Harry is also way hotter. [And he's meant to be with Hermione. Just sayin’]

Because of my love for books, characters and imagination I have always had serious book crushes. Over on the coolest new blog on the block, Bangin’ Hot Boys Book Club, we’re discussing first (fictional) loves. I think mine may have been Calvin O’Keefe. Name that book! I have had many fictional boyfriends and they’re only getting better

I love making friends. This is 100% truth. So if nothing I’ve said here has put you off too much, let’s be friends.

Definitely Not a Zombie Movie

So, I've gone weeks without posting and now two in one day. I guess that's what "New Moon" will do for you. I did a post just like this somewhere after "Twilight" but I don't think anyone saw it and I decided it deserves repeating. Onward.

As I mentioned in the last post, I'm not going to review "New Moon." But I couldn't resist applauding Anna Kendrick (Jessica Stanley) because she is brilliant. Tell me you weren't forming some serious laugh lines during her "leprosy" monologue. I dare you to deny it. Don't be so pleased with your own self-reverential cleverness.

Anyway, although I think she was a hit in "Twilight" for most people as well, I have to admit that I've always had a bias from the moment she was cast. You see, when I was 15 I caught the last half of this bizarre movie about theatre kids while on a plane ride to Spain. I watched, miles above the Atlantic, as Anna Kendrick's character "Fritzi" went from being a timid wannabe to a psycho diva. It was hilarious and goodness but could she sing.

If you're interested at all in early Anna Kendrick kicking butt poisoning the competition and taking namesstealing the lead, watch the short video below from the movie "Camp." She enters in at about :21.

Warning: A little language!

Oh snap. Work it, Anna Kendrick!

Random Fun Facts Friday

1. I love pudding. Specifically, Swiss Miss brand. I don’t like the Jello brand at all. Oh, and it has to be chocolate. I don’t really do vanilla. At all. {Self-proclaimed chocolate snob here}

Sadly, I don’t think I’ve had pudding in a long time. I think it’s because I can never find Swiss Miss in the grocery store anymore. : (

When I did my first show in High School, my best friend brought me a six pack of pudding instead of flowers to congratulate me. It was the best.
{Bonus picture! Me looking super young on a creepy craft-project horse in "Carousel"}

2. It’s a good thing I never had any interest in illegal substances, cigarettes, or underage drinking because I realized something today: I totally found myself with an addiction in the most cliché way.

You know how they teach you in school about how things like peer pressure, ad campaigns and celebrities make kids want to try dumb things like cigarettes or drugs? I always scoffed at this because I knew that even if some guy looked a tad hot smoking, I still wouldn’t want to smoke. Um smoking is GROSS.

Then I realized…I am no better. I started drinking coffee because of Lorelai and Rory, my bffs. I used to hate coffee. But I loved the smell and I loved those Gilmore Girls so my freshman year of college I started drinking it now and then. Especially when I watched Gilmore Girls (which was and is daily). At first I thought it was gross and I’d add lots of sugar and milk. But I kept drinking it. Now I start most mornings with coffee and I like it. Whoa. The power of Gilmore Girls. And, um, Hollywood.

You should know I felt kind of dumb when I discovered that Alexis Bledel hates coffee and always had coke in her coffee cup. My addiction is based on a lie.

3. Last week was Homecoming. I have little to no school spirit but I mustered some up to go to halftime festivities and then enjoyed a night of Chinese Food and Cranium with mis amigos.

Oh yeah…the South is weird. They dress up here for Homecoming. At home I usually did face paint and threw on a sweatshirt. Tis a different world.

{What's that strange cardboard figure? Oh, just a Zac Efron stand-up that my friends own, no big deal. One of the Mr. RC nominees couldn't be there so his face was taped over Zac's to represent him. Too bad you can't see that 'cause of the flash.}

4. Did you notice I said mis amigos in that last fact? I am so bilingual. Or not so much. I speak un poco Español y/und ein bischen Deutsch. However, next year my big plan is to teach abroad in Spain for a year. I’m graduating college in May and I am far from ready to take on the “real” adult world so I thought I’d escape abroad again. Plus, I love Spain (second only to Austria, although maybe that’ll change. Bring it on Spain). Plus, I would love to become fluent in a language.

Anyway, I need to start brushing up on my Spanish.

5. Right now I am listening to “Should’ve Said No” by Taylor Swift, because I just finished watching her be ADORABLE on Ellen and needed to bask in her adorableness some more.

This song always makes me think of an infamous dinner. My sister and I drove 45 minutes to meet with her fiancé and future in-laws to try out a restaurant that might cater the rehearsal dinner. Well, we love the in-laws but they are not as timely as our clan. Jen and I arrived and got a table for 6 in a busy bustling restaurant and then proceeded to sit there alone for the next hour. People kept glaring at us for taking up a huge table and we got so hungry we had to order appetizers so we weren’t able to properly test the rest of the food by the time everyone else arrived. And the worst part was Mr. Fiancé kept calling and saying five more minutes, ten more minutes, etc….it was much longer.

To occupy our time we re-wrote some of Taylor Swift’s lyrics to suit our needs:

“You should’ve said go, you shouldn’t drive slow, you should’ve thought twice before you said ten minutes mo’”

Yes, we are geniuses.

6. Today I look a mess. Because it is raining. And therefore I just can’t muster the will to care.

On the plus side, I get to wear my super fun Target rain boots!

Happy Friday! Anything random you'd like to share?

Joy to the World

Warning: This is a corny post.

It's really easy to get sucked into the negative. News stories about oppression, violence, and hatred fill the papers and TV stations. Really good people get sick and die. Sites like FML.com (as in f*** my life) post stories about embarrassing or upsetting things that happen to the poster. And the sad part is sometimes, like with the latter site, it's all too easy to get sucked in. We can't look away from the proverbial train wrecks of life. Or at least I'll admit sometimes I can't.

Today one of my friends sent me a link to a new (or new to me) site entitled GivesMeHope.com which is, in its essence, an antithesis to FML.com. People post stories of wonderful things they encounter, testaments to the true goodness of humanity. Yes, it's a little corny but it made me smile--and not my wry "oh goodness, that DOES suck" smile, but a genuine soulful smile.

This got me thinking about other stories/things I've witnessed that reveal the beauty of human actions or just present an alternative to the normally cheerless news reports. All of a sudden it was easier to think of moments where humanity is good instead of evil.

One that still stands out to me is a news article I read a few years ago about two teenage boys taking a stand again bullying. Two teenage boys. I hunted down the article and felt uplifted all over again.

Yesterday, I cried tears of joy watching Euna Lee and Laura Ling reunite with their families after being held captive and almost sent to 12 years at a labor camp.

If you want a quick pick me up, I encourage you to visit GivesMeHope.com. Here's my favorite from the current page:

"Today I was eating lunch at the mall and noticed a girl about 16 years old nonchalantly putting quarters in every single candy machine on the first floor. She then took an escalator to the second floor and watched with a smile as kids became happy and excited when they discovered the money. She GMH."

So what good things have you witnessed lately?
