Joy to the World

Warning: This is a corny post.

It's really easy to get sucked into the negative. News stories about oppression, violence, and hatred fill the papers and TV stations. Really good people get sick and die. Sites like FML.com (as in f*** my life) post stories about embarrassing or upsetting things that happen to the poster. And the sad part is sometimes, like with the latter site, it's all too easy to get sucked in. We can't look away from the proverbial train wrecks of life. Or at least I'll admit sometimes I can't.

Today one of my friends sent me a link to a new (or new to me) site entitled GivesMeHope.com which is, in its essence, an antithesis to FML.com. People post stories of wonderful things they encounter, testaments to the true goodness of humanity. Yes, it's a little corny but it made me smile--and not my wry "oh goodness, that DOES suck" smile, but a genuine soulful smile.

This got me thinking about other stories/things I've witnessed that reveal the beauty of human actions or just present an alternative to the normally cheerless news reports. All of a sudden it was easier to think of moments where humanity is good instead of evil.

One that still stands out to me is a news article I read a few years ago about two teenage boys taking a stand again bullying. Two teenage boys. I hunted down the article and felt uplifted all over again.

Yesterday, I cried tears of joy watching Euna Lee and Laura Ling reunite with their families after being held captive and almost sent to 12 years at a labor camp.

If you want a quick pick me up, I encourage you to visit GivesMeHope.com. Here's my favorite from the current page:

"Today I was eating lunch at the mall and noticed a girl about 16 years old nonchalantly putting quarters in every single candy machine on the first floor. She then took an escalator to the second floor and watched with a smile as kids became happy and excited when they discovered the money. She GMH."

So what good things have you witnessed lately?

I will be checking out that site, too. Today is one of those days when I need a "pick-me-up." And that is so sweet of that girl to do that re: the candy machines!!! (Until the kids' mothers send her the dentist bill... :p)

What a great story! We need more people like that in the world.
We went to register our car the other day, and the lady said our title was null because I had signed it (long story) but instead of making us get a new one she let us register it. It was actually really sweet because she saw the panic in our eyes and how stressed out we were with the whole process, but she knew it was a technicality so she let it slide. It definitely gave me hope.
