…When people had disputes, instead of throwing around foul language and malicious threats, we all expressed ourselves like an Austen character:
“I take no leave of you … I send no compliments to your mother…I am most seriously displeased.” --Pride and Prejudice
I mean, really, BURN.
And speaking of that fine novel, which I am just about to finish re-reading, I pretty much want to punch Lydia in the face all of the time. Can I get an ‘Amen’?
P.S.: Oh the irony of me complimenting the art of intelligent insults and then following up with something as elementary as “punch Lydia in the face.” This kind of hypocrisy is a talent, my friend.
P.P.S.: Do you like the film versions of Pride and Prejudice? Which? I prefer the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle version, although Keira Knightley’s is all right as well. She is just not Elizabeth Bennet to me and Colin Firth will always be my Mr. Darcy. Of course, the actress playing Jane in the Keira version is a drastic improvement on the BBC Jane. Anyway, now that I am finishing the novel I wish I had the BBC version to watch!

*sigh* Colin Firth will always be my Darcy. I've never even seen the Keira Knightly version. I also love the Hugh Grant/Emma Thompson version of "Sense and Sensibility." I love the books but find that the movies are a little easier to digest. But yes, that Jane had some wit about her.
So, when we were in Oxford for European Studies, we went to the Globe to see a production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. The man who played Falstaf(f?) played Jane's father in the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. Our Renaissance art history professor pointed this out to me as she was forcing the young Welsh (and good looking) ancient Greek warfare professor to watch the series in its entirety for the first time.
Oh, Ali, I'm so glad you brought up that story. And really, the ancient Greek warfare professor wasn't good looking. He was hot.
As far as adaptations go, I'm torn.
BBC-accurate, awesome Colin Firth, and sassy Jennifer Ehle (but she's way too old to be playing that character. Keira's actually the right age). Keira version-left out a lot but better Jane and it's filmed gorgeously....I mean, not to be a nerd here, but the cinematography is stunning. But again...Keira...definitely one of her better performances but didn't strike me as uber Elizabethlike.
Hehe.. this is why I love you! (Among many, many other reasons that is.)
I love the Colin Firth version of Pride & Prejudice- but I have a Prejudice (ha!) against Keira Knightley. I can't stand her uh, vehement, accent.. or her voice.. it really just irks me. Now I want to watch one of the versions though!
Bahahaha. I love Jane Austen and the phrase, 'I mean really, BURN.' combined is legit.
Austen insults are always the best. Almost as good as Shakespearean insults when they say stuff like "Thou dankish spur-galled joithead!" But anyways, Colin Firth is always Mr. Darcy in my book.
*Amen* I've always wanted to hit her too!
Haha, amazing post! If someone said that to me I would have trouble understanding if it was an insult.
I love the Keira Knightley version. It's my favorite movie. It might be because it's the first I saw. But I think it's so well made and somehow artistic and I love Keira Knightley. Everything with that mvoie is perfection. (Mr Collins is hilarious.)
ah i have been hoping to read some austen soon!
and really, probably the most wonderful burn ever. ha
and i love love the bbc version. i love the music in keira's version and they did i good job cutting it down to a much smaller time but bbc will always be my favorite.
Your post is amazing! I really wish we could all speak like that!!! :D Maybe the world would be a better place!
Anyway, I love the Keira version, but the Jennifer Ehle one is my all time favourite!!

Oh, the never-ending appeal of Austen. Try youtube for the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice; it has a surprising amount of full-length mini-series.
I first saw the Keira Knightly version so therefore, I like that one best. I dare say, it doesn't matter.... I am so in love with the story and Mr. Darcy that I would vote yes to both.
I even read Mr. Darcy, Vampyre by Amanda Grange... it was good!
Cheers and Love~Ivy
